[ShipperGuide] User Access Management: Creating Custom User Roles

  • Updated

The User Access Management (UAM) feature allows designated administrative users to control who in your organization can access product areas and actions by creating custom roles that allows for custom access to specific parts of ShipperGuide.

Each role is a set of permissions. When you edit a role, everyone with that role instantly inherits the change.

The default roles within ShipperGuide Admin, Standard and Supervisor are still available and have not been changed and cannot be edited.

Only “Supervisor” level users are able to access multiple locations and create locations due to this access, their roles cannot be restricted using UAM.

Please note: Only Admin and custom roles with permission to edit users can create new custom roles. The UAM feature is only available for paid subscription users.

Custom roles are scoped to a single location account. A role you create only applies within the ShipperGuide location account you created it in — there's currently no way to create or apply a role across multiple locations from the UI. If your organization needs the same custom role(s) rolled out across many location accounts (for example, a multi-facility company standardizing roles org-wide), contact support — this requires manual setup on our side and isn't a self-serve action yet.

Accessing User Access Management (UAM)

  1. In the top navigation bar, click Settings .
  2. Click on the Users tab.
  3. The page lists every active user in your organization.

 User Role Creation Admin Tips

  • Least privilege: start with the smallest set of permissions that enables the user’s job.

  • Use roles for consistency: define a role once, assign it to many users within the same location.

  • Review quarterly: remove access that’s no longer needed.

  • Test changes: create or repurpose a test account to validate role behavior before broad rollout.

  • Rolling out across multiple locations? Reach out to support rather than recreating the role manually in each location account — see the note above.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I apply one custom role across multiple ShipperGuide locations?
Not from the UI directly — custom roles are created per location account. If you need the same role(s) standardized across several locations, contact support to have it set up.

Who can create custom roles?
Admins, and any custom role that's been granted permission to edit users. The feature is only available on paid ShipperGuide subscriptions.

If I edit a role, does it affect users immediately?
Yes — everyone assigned to that role instantly inherits the permission change.

Can Supervisor access be restricted through a custom role?
No. Multi-location access and the ability to create new locations are tied to the Supervisor level itself and can't be granted or restricted through UAM.

Where can I see an overview of the default roles (Admin, Standard, Supervisor) before creating a custom one?
See the article ShipperGuide User Roles for a breakdown of the built-in roles and when a custom role makes more sense.
