To start managing your yard efficiently with Opendock’s Yard Management System (YMS), the first step is to create areas that represent your facility’s layout—whether it’s dock doors, parking spots, or container zones.
✅ Accessing YMS
-
From the left-side menu, select “Live Yard View.”
-
Use the “Search Warehouses” search bar to select the warehouse where you want to set up your areas.
⚠️ Important:
If you don’t see the YMS for your warehouse, make sure that YMS has been enabled for your site. Contact your Opendock admin or support team if you need assistance.
✅ Planning Your Areas
Before creating areas, it’s helpful to think about how your yard and dock doors are organized. For example:
-
Are your doors segmented by function (e.g., Inbound vs. Outbound)?
→ You can create separate areas for Inbound Doors and Outbound Doors.
-
Are your doors spread across different buildings?
→ You can create distinct areas for each building (e.g., Building A – Inbound, Building B – Outbound).
-
Do you have specific yard zones like:
-
Drop Trailer Area
-
Visitor Parking
-
General Parking
-
Each of these can (and should) be set up as a separate area.
✅ Creating a New Area
-
In Live Yard View, click on the “+ AREA” button.
-
Enter a Name for the area that clearly describes its purpose (e.g., Inbound Dock, Visitor Parking).
-
Click Save.
That’s it—the area is now created!
Now, it’s time to add Spots to this area.
✅ Adding Spots to an Area
We recommend adding spots in bulk for efficiency.
-
Click on “+ Add Spots” within the area you just created.
-
Select “Multiple” to add several spots at once.
You’ll be prompted to enter the following details:
➡️ Number of Spots
How many spots or doors you want to add to this area.
Example: If you have 50 dock doors, enter 50.
➡️ Start Number
This is useful if your doors or spots are numbered in a specific sequence.
Example: If your dock doors start from 300, and you’re adding 50, your spots will be automatically numbered: 301, 302, 303, …, 350.
➡️ Fixed Leading Character
Add a letter prefix for your spots to make them easier to identify:
-
D for Dock Doors
-
P for Parking Spots
Example: D301, D302, etc.
➡️ Spot Type
Select whether these are Parking or Docking spots.
Once all fields are filled in, click “Add”.
✅ Your area and its corresponding spots are now created!
✅ Managing Spot Availability
By default, all newly created spots are marked as “Open” and available for use.
If you need to close a spot (for example, for maintenance, cleaning, or operational reasons):
-
Click on or select the spot in the Live Yard View.
-
Choose the option to “Close” the spot.
-
Provide a reason for the closure.
ℹ️ Opendock will automatically track how long a spot has been closed, giving you visibility into yard capacity constraints and maintenance timelines.
✅ Next Steps
Once your areas and spots are set up, you’re ready to:
✔️ Start assigning trucks and containers to specific spots
✔️ Use drag-and-drop movements for efficiency
✔️ Maintain real-time visibility of your yard capacity
