[Opendock] What is Opendock’s Yard Management System (YMS)?

  • Updated

Opendock’s Yard Management System (YMS) was created to simplify and streamline how facilities manage their yards. Our goal is to offer a product that’s easy to use, quick to implement, and seamlessly integrates with dock scheduling operations.

We believe that yard management doesn’t need to be complicated. With Opendock YMS, facilities get a simple yet powerful tool to track and manage all assets—whether it’s trailers, containers, or trucks—while ensuring full visibility of dock occupancy at all times.

By focusing on clear communication, automated processes, and intuitive controls, Opendock YMS helps facilities move more with less effort.

Key Capabilities of Opendock YMS

✅ Driver Self Check-In and 2-Way SMS Communication

Our YMS journey starts with Gate Management or Driver Self Check-In:

  • Drivers check in upon arrival by scanning a QR code or using a tablet.

  • The system collects personal and asset information, automatically creating a Visit record.

  • From check-in to departure, you can communicate with drivers via SMS, providing instructions or updates without manual calls.

This ensures a contactless and efficient process while keeping all parties informed.

✅ Customizable Yard Areas

Easily map out your yard to reflect real operational needs:

  • Define specific zones like Parking Spots, Container Areas, or Doors.

  • Assign clear names to each area and spot.

  • Manage spot availability:

    • Taken: when assigned to a truck or container.

    • Open: available for new assignments.

    • Closed: temporarily out of service for maintenance or other reasons—add notes to explain closures.

This makes it simple to understand yard capacity and plan movements efficiently.

✅ Drag and Drop Truck Assignments

Managing yard movements is as easy as dragging and dropping:

  • Move trucks or containers from the Waiting Area to their assigned Parking or Door Spots.

  • Once assigned, the system automatically sends an SMS to inform the driver of their next action.

  • When it’s time to leave, simply mark the driver as Departed—closing out the visit and SMS conversation.

No more radio calls or manual note-taking—just fast, automated coordination.

✅ Full Visibility of Trailers and Containers

Stay on top of every asset in the yard:

  • Track where containers are located and gather key information like:

    • Vendor or Shipper

    • Trailer/Container Number

    • Any additional critical details

  • Link containers directly to their dock appointments, providing end-to-end visibility from arrival to pick-up.

This ensures nothing gets misplaced and your team always knows the status and location of every asset.

✅ Manage Assets with Statuses and Internal Alerts

Our flexible status system keeps your team aligned:

  • Mark containers and trailers with statuses like:

    • Arrived

    • Loading

    • Unloading

    • Loading Complete

    • Unloading Complete

    • Ready for Pick Up

    • Departed

You can also flag containers as FULL or EMPTY, making it easier to prioritize and plan tasks.

✅ Exportable List View of Assets

Get a real-time, comprehensive view of your yard:

  • View all assets with details such as trailer ID, carrier, status, location, and timestamps.

  • Use filters and sorting to focus on what matters: by status (e.g., empty, loaded), location, or priority.

  • The list updates automatically as statuses change.

  • Need to share or analyze data? Easily export reports in CSV, Excel, or PDF formats for:

    • Compliance reporting

    • Internal tracking

    • Operational analysis
