[Opendock] In Transit status for Move tasks

  • Updated

In Opendock, the 'In Transit' status shows every trailer or container that is being moved in your yard, from the moment a yard driver starts a Move task until the asset arrives at its destination spot. Yard managers see moves as they happen in the Yard View, and drivers get a clear reason when a destination is no longer available.

Availability: In Transit turns on for all Yard Management customers on November 9, 2026. To get it earlier, request early access.

What you see in the Yard View

When a driver starts a Move task:

  • The spot the asset left opens up right away.
  • The asset appears on its destination spot as a pulsing, semi transparent marker with an in transit icon. The spot keeps its own status color (open, closed or reserved).
  • Hovering over the marker shows the asset, where it is coming from, where it is going, the yard driver and the Move task number.
  • The In Transit tab in the side panel lists every asset currently moving, with a search box. The In Transit count at the top of the Yard View pulses while anything is moving.
  • In the List View, the Area column shows "In transit" for moving assets.

When the driver completes the task, the asset lands on its destination spot and leaves the In Transit tab.

Create a Move task

  1. In the Yard View, drag an asset onto the spot it should move to, or select New Move. The Create move task panel opens with the asset, origin and destination filled in.
  2. Choose whether to reserve the destination. Reserve destination spot is selected by default. A reserved spot can only be used by this task. Only open spots can be reserved.
  3. Optionally add a description, an assignee and priority, or attachments.
  4. Select Save to create a task for a yard driver, or Skip & Confirm Move to move the asset in the Yard View immediately, without a driver task.

You can plan a move to a spot that is closed, reserved or occupied today. The task waits until the spot is available. In that case only Save is available. To see only open spots in the destination list, select Show only open spots.

Complete a move in the Yard Tasks app

  1. Open the Move task from the To Do list. Use the filters to show only your tasks, only Move tasks or only overdue tasks.
  2. Select Start Task. A timer starts and the asset shows as in transit in the Yard View.
  3. Optionally add photos or PDFs under Attachments (up to 50MB each).
  4. When the asset is parked, select Complete Task.

When a driver picks a destination in the Yard Tasks app, the spot is reserved automatically. Only open spots, or spots with a carrier visit and no trailer, can be selected.

When a task can't be started or completed

A Move task is blocked when its destination isn't available. The task shows the reason:

MessageWhat it means
Destination spot is reserved to Move Task #123.Another task holds the reservation for this spot.
Destination spot is closed. The spot was closed after the task was created.
Destination spot is occupied by another asset.Another trailer or container is parked there.
{Asset} is already in transit to this spot.Another asset is already on its way to this spot.
Asset already being moved by another move task. This asset is already moving for a different task.

To continue, wait until the spot is free, change the task's destination, or cancel the task.

When two moves target the same spot

If several tasks without a reservation point to the same spot, the first one completed gets the spot. The others stay open but can't be completed until the spot is free again or their destination changes. To guarantee a spot for one move, reserve it when you create the task.

Rules while an asset is in transit

  • It can't be assigned to a different spot by hand.
  • It can't be marked Missing.
  • It can't be checked with Run Check, and it is left out of Inventory Check tasks.

These rules end when the move is completed or cancelled.

You can still assign a different asset to a spot that something is in transit to. The manual assignment takes the spot, and the moving asset's task becomes blocked. If you close a spot that has assets in transit to it, you'll see a warning first.
