Overview
The Next-Day Scheduling Cutoff feature in Opendock is designed to give your warehouse operations team predictable preparation time. It prevents carriers from booking last-minute appointments that land on the same day or the very next operational day, ensuring your team is never surprised by a booking they haven't planned for.
Why use this?
Standard "Lead Time" (e.g., must book 2 hours in advance) is often not enough. If a carrier books on a Sunday for a Monday morning slot, your team might not see that appointment until they walk in on Monday. This feature solves that by enforcing a buffer based on your Operating Intervals (shifts), rather than just clock time.
How It Works
This feature works by counting Operating Intervals—not just calendar days.
An Operating Interval is any continuous block of time your facility is open.
Example A: Open 7 AM – 7 PM (Mon-Fri). This is 1 interval per day.
Example B: Open 7 AM – 12 PM and 1 PM – 5 PM (Mon-Fri). This is 2 intervals per day.
When you configure this setting (e.g., to "1" or "2"), the system looks at the moment the carrier is attempting to book and "skips" that many future intervals before showing availability.
The Golden Rule:
If a carrier attempts to book during an active interval, that current interval counts as #1. If they book while the facility is closed (e.g., Sunday), the very next upcoming interval counts as #1.
Configuration & Examples
Most facilities will set this feature to 1 or 2. Below are detailed examples of how this affects the carrier's view.
Scenario 1: Preventing "Same Day" Bookings
Goal: You want to ensure that if a carrier books today, the earliest they can arrive is tomorrow.
Settings:
Hours: Monday – Friday, 7 AM – 7 PM (1 Interval/day).
Next-Day Cutoff Setting: 1
| Carrier Books On... | System Logic | Earliest Appointment Available |
| Monday @ 10:00 AM | The current interval (Monday) counts as 1. It is removed. | Tuesday Morning |
| Monday @ 6:55 PM | The current interval (Monday) counts as 1. It is removed. | Tuesday Morning |
Scenario 2: The "Skip Tomorrow" Rule (Standard)
Goal: You need a full day's notice. If a carrier books on Monday, they cannot come until Wednesday.
Settings:
Hours: Monday – Friday, 7 AM – 7 PM (1 Interval/day).
Next-Day Cutoff Setting: 2
| Carrier Books On... | System Logic | Earliest Appointment Available |
| Monday @ 4:00 PM | 1. Removes current interval (Monday). 2. Removes next interval (Tuesday). | Wednesday Morning |
| Friday @ 4:00 PM | 1. Removes current interval (Friday). 2. Removes next interval (Monday). | Tuesday Morning |
Scenario 3: The "Weekend Surprise" Protection
Goal: Prevent carriers from booking on Sunday for a Monday morning slot, which leaves the warehouse no time to prepare.
Settings:
Hours: Monday – Friday, 7 AM – 7 PM. (Closed Sat/Sun).
Next-Day Cutoff Setting: 1
| Carrier Books On... | System Logic | Earliest Appointment Available |
| Sunday @ 2:00 PM | The facility is closed. The system looks for the next upcoming interval (Monday) and counts it as 1. Monday is removed. | Tuesday Morning |
Note: By setting this to "1", you ensure that any booking made over the weekend pushes the appointment to Tuesday, giving your team Monday to review and prepare.
Scenario 4: Multiple Shifts Per Day (Advanced)
Goal: Your facility closes for lunch, creating two intervals per day.
Settings:
Hours: Mon–Fri, 7 AM – 12 PM (Morning Shift) and 1 PM – 5 PM (Afternoon Shift).
Next-Day Cutoff Setting: 2
Because you have two intervals per day, a setting of "2" will skip the next two shifts, not necessarily two days.
| Carrier Books On... | System Logic | Earliest Appointment Available |
| Monday @ 9:00 AM | 1. Removes current interval (Mon Morning). 2. Removes next interval (Mon Afternoon). | Tuesday Morning |
| Monday @ 2:00 PM | 1. Removes current interval (Mon Afternoon). 2. Removes next interval (Tue Morning). | Tuesday Afternoon |
Summary Recommendation
Set to 1: If you simply want to block same-day appointments and ensure carriers book at least "for tomorrow" (or Tuesday, if booking on Sunday).
Set to 2: If you need a full 24-hour operational buffer. (e.g., Booking Monday puts you into Wednesday).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this setting affect the "Lead Time" rule?
This feature works alongside your lead time settings. Lead time is usually hours-based (e.g., "2 hours notice"), whereas this cutoff is Shift-based. The stricter of the two will always apply.
What happens on Holidays?
If you have marked a day as closed for a Holiday in Opendock, that day is not an interval. The system will skip over the Holiday to find the next valid operating interval to remove.
